5 Ways to Save Money on your Backyard Remodel in Orange County, CA

Remodeling your backyard is a great option for many homeowners — especially Orange County residents where the sun always shines and the night air doesn’t disappoint. But outdoor projects can get expensive, so you better do your homework before you get started. Here are 5 ways to save money on your backyard remodel in Orange County, CA.

1. Do a price comparison with different materials and different manufacturers

Price varies not only from material-to-material, but amongst different manufacturers as well. So shop around for different materials first such as brick, pavers, cement, and stone. Once you find the look you’re after, shop between different manufacturers. There are a good amount of similar materials carried by different manufacturers but with very different pricing.

2. Prioritize the work on your yard

Recognize that you may not get everything on your wishlist when it comes to your backyard remodel. Don’t get me wrong, you can get pretty much anything you want. But if you start to notice that what you want is over your budget, then prioritize what work completed. In other words, do what will make the most impact for your buck. Maybe skip the water feature, or only use pavers in the backyard and not the side yard. You could even substitute an outdoor fireplace with a fire pit instead. In the end, remodel the parts of your yard where people gather most.

3. Get multiple quotes from different contractors

Never settle on the first quote you get from a contractor that visits your home. In fact, you’re probably still sticker shocked from the whole thing. All the more reason to get a few quotes from different contractors. Make sure to find well reviewed contractors that are fully licensed, bonded, and certified for your area. Keep in mind you usually get what you pay for too. So never go with the cheapest, nor the most expensive (unless you really trust the contractor). Usually somewhere in the middle is the happy medium to a great home project…and at a fair price!

Heck, you can even use our very own extensive network of pre-qualified contractors. We’ll select the 3 best matched local contractors for your project. How? Through your landscape design plans of course!

We’ll even send your project blueprint directly to each contractor in order to give you the best, most accurate, apples-to-apples quote comparison out there!

4. Have your project done in the off-season

Wanting to use your new backyard in the summer is great, but construction should begin well before then. In fact, having work done on your home during the Fall and Winter are typically more cost-effective. This is due to the fact that residential contractors are usually slower during these “off months” — which translates to more savings in your pocket. Also, this guarantees the work will be complete well before the sunny summer months where you can sit back and enjoy the view.

5. Save money in the long-term rather than short-term

Finally, saving money on your home project doesn’t need to be upfront — meaning you can invest in backyard features now that will pay off in the long run. A great example of this would be utilizing pavers, or perhaps even artificial grass, in your backyard. While this won’t necessarily save you money at first, you’ll definitely add value to your property, save money from lower water usage, and this will certainly outlast most traditional backyard features your neighbors probably have.

How Fire Brightens Up Any Backyard Remodel

Fire is a primitive force intimately tied with human existence. It’s changed the course of history, allowing everything from baking to constructing tall buildings. And now, it’s used a lot for ambience in residential backyards.

It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.
-Frederick Douglass

Nothing makes a house feel like a home when it comes to a cozy fireplace, or sitting around the fire pit while roasting s’mores with good company. The light and heat bring people together to share in new memories. Because that’s really what fires do, they bring families together. It doesn’t just brighten up backyards in the literal sense, but in ways that bring joy to homeowners.

Moduline pavers for orange county ca

Emerging Trends in Large Scale Patio Pavers in Orange County, CA

There’s an old saying that “bigger is better.” Although that’s quite often not true at all, in the contemporary world of outdoor living design, large scale pavers certainly are one of the hottest trends.

This phenomenon has a lot to do with the continuing evolution of what’s known in design circles as “indoor/outdoor living.” In layman’s terms, this design concept refers to outdoor living designs that are a continuation of the interior environment. For the last several years, popularity has continued to increase for larger tiles and wider wooden planks for interior flooring. Continuing this trend outdoors was a natural progression in creating designs that flow more easily from one environment to the other. And as demand for larger pavers continued to grow, a multitude of style options began to emerge.

Popular Paver Face Textures

Natural stone textures have been popular for the last several years — and continue to be so, particularly in certain regions — however, there’s a rising trend towards smoother faced pavers that offer crisp, clean lines. With the rise in porcelain pavers, there has also been an increase in woodgrain-textured pavers. This is reflective of a rise in the popularity of interior wood look porcelain tile — one of the hottest trends in interior flooring. This style offers the look of natural wood without any of the stain or maintenance worries, which is particularly beneficial in an outdoor environment.

Trends in Plank-Style Pavers

You guessed it…with an increase in woodgrain pavers, the plank shape naturally followed suit. In addition to porcelain styles, plank-style concrete pavers are also trending. With woodgrain porcelain pavers, wider planks are more popular, as they more closely mimic wooden decking and also reflect interior flooring trends. However, both wide and narrow planks are trending in the concrete styles, both in textured and smooth-face plank pavers. Plank shapes are also available in the Belgard’s versatile Moduline Series™, which offers an array of colors that allow designers to have some fun with their paver designs.

Large Scale Paver Shapes

It’s definitely hip to be square, and the larger the better. This can be seen in both slab-style pavers and numerous porcelain paver lines. Belgard regularly sees orders for sizes up to 24″ x 24″, with custom orders of porcelain pavers in even larger squares. However, large rectangles are also quite popular, which is more reflective of the current trends in interior flooring.

Laying Patterns for Large Scale Pavers

Popular pattern styles vary, depending on paver shape. With square pavers, a straight (or stacked bond) lay is most often seen, which is actually a contrast to the stagger patterns more often seen in interior flooring. Diagonal patterns are sometimes seen, too, but are not quite as popular. Rectangular and plank pavers are most often laid in a staggered running bond, but are sometimes seen in a herringbone pattern in more adventurous designs. Modular ashlar patterns are also quite popular, which incorporate multiple pavers shapes and sizes. A newly emerging trend is to entangle the pavers with the surrounding landscape, either by staggering the edge of the paver field or by using squares in a checkerboard or stepping-stone pattern.
